Zac Efron breaks free of Disney and takes on a role as a drug runner in a remake of a Swedish film, Snabba Cash, according to E!
There was a huge bidding war for rights to the film, but Warner Bros took it home. Efron will produce the film.
“The film follows three interconnected stories set in the world of drugs and organized crime,” E! reported.
The movie is “based on a novel by Jens Lapidus and was a major hit in its home country this year,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Efron plays a money launderer “who hopes to get rich by smuggling cocaine for a mob boss.”
The Hollywood Reporter suggests that Snabba Cash “represents an opportunity for the youngster to grow beyond the teen roles that made him a star. The project, the first acquisition for Efron's shingle, also sends a signal as to the sort of high-level material with which Efron wants to be associated.”
